“I DIDN’T DO NUTIN’, LOUIE! IT WUZN’T ME! I SWEAR! YA GOTTA BELIEVE ME!”
Dwayne cringed as Hugo begged the Gianelli Lieutenant for his life. Cross-eyed Louie had been hunting the Lone Star plant for days, getting suspicious after one too many drug busts. Then having one of Sam’s spirits show up searching for Dwayne had put the Mafia goon on high alert. The undercover cop had been lucky and managed to deflect the attention away from himself.
Which was bad for Hugo.
The thug had the misfortune of being in the right place at the wrong time. It was one of Hugo’s areas that had been hit by a Lone Star raid, one that was pure luck and had nothing to do with Dwayne’s insider info. But the timing was unfortunate for the former ganger, as it made him look bad at a time that Louie was looking for someone to hang.
“SHIT, LOUIE! I BIN WORKIN’ HARD FOR DA FAMILY! I AIN’T NO NARC! ASK ANYONE! I BIN RUNNIN’ WIT THE RAGERS FER YEARS!”
Louie clearly wasn’t buying what Hugo was selling, and the rest of the assembled Mafioso knew it. Dwayne wasn’t about to speak up for a cut-throat slimeball like Hugo, especially when it might draw more attention. The Lieutenant looked like he was trying to decide whether to just shoot Hugo in the head, or get more gruesome as an example.
“COME-ON GUYS! SOMEBUDDY SAY SOMETIN! YOU KNOWS I’M STRAIGHT UP HERE! FRANK?! FRANKIE?! DWAYNE?! CARLOS?! TIN?! SOMEBUDDY FUCKING TELL HIM HE’S MAKIN’ A MISTAKE HERE!”
No-one met the doomed man’s eyes, and the people he called out directly did their best to blend in with the background. Even if Hugo was innocent of betraying the Family, no-one was going to risk sharing his fate.
As Louie pulled out his gun, Hugo’s pleas took on a more desperate tone.
“OH GOD! PLEASE LOUIE, YOU GOTTA LISTEN! YOU DON’T GOTTA DO THIS! JUST FUCKING LISTEN TO ME! PLEASE LOUIE, YOU HAFTA…”
The gunshot was deafening in the warehouse, and the sound echoed forever. Louie put his gun back in its shoulder harness and glared at the others.
“Show’s over. Get back to work.”
Dwayne heaved a silent sigh of relief and shuffled out with the others. At least his cover was safe for now. Hugo’s murder would keep Louie satisfied for a while, and the cop knew he was getting close to breaking this case wide open.
Besides, now there’s one less scumbag on the streets.
