“…interested in retaining their services in the future. We shall be in touch again.”
The red-haired woman deactivated the connection and the voice-modulator, triggering the transfer of funds to the fixer’s account. She smiled to herself. The groundwork of the team had been formed years ago, but Jimmy would be useful in keeping them busy, well paid, and in shape.
The woman bowed deeply and replied aloud. The words were unnecessary, but she had learned long ago that using her voice allowed her to better control the information she was giving.
“Mr. Torgami confirmed that the source of Deep Moss has been destroyed. And Mr. Hendricks has delivered the small shipment procured from the the smugglers. Mr. Beausoleil was somewhat slow to confirm that they were unable to secure the source as he was instructed.”
“I could find no evidence of infighting despite the competing instructions. None of them appear to have been aware of the others’ goals.”
“Communication is an issue.”
She considered this for a moment. “Perhaps. Shall I arrange for a lesson?”
“No, Niamh. That will not be necessary. Lofwyr will be satisfied with the Yucatan solution, and it will take Ryumyo some time to rebuild after the disaster. The shadows will continue to teach until I have further use for them.”
Niamh nodded again. “Mr. Card will keep them busy. Do you have any further instructions regarding Mr. Simmonds?”
“That plan still needs time to reach fruition. His usefulness will remain dependent on his influence. Other plans are in place to ensure his prominence.
“I am pleased with your performance in this matter, Niamh. Your handling of Mr. Nakada was masterful. Not only did you ensure the General’s re-election, but increased Mr. Simmonds’ usefulness in the process.”
Niamh blushed at the effusive praise, but shook her head. “I was merely executing a small part of your operation. I can hardly take credit for your plan.”
“No need for modesty, my dear. You know as well as I that manipulating a dragon’s minion is challenging at best, and even the best laid plans require creative troubleshooting in the field. You not only carried out my plan, but you foiled Ryumyo’s in the process.”
“At any rate, we hold a significant advantage for now, and there is little for you to do but wait for the remaining seeds to germinate. I believe you have earned a well-deserved vacation, Niamh. The jet is fueled and ready for your trip. Wedi taith da. Rhoi fy ran eich mam.”
Niamh’s eyes widened in surprise and the red-haired woman bowed even deeper.
“Mae’n anrhydedd, Arglwyddes Hestaby. Diolch yn fawr.”
