People just don’t get it. All you ever hear is how bad a place the world is. How dangerous it is and how everyone is out to get you.
The world ain’t a bad place.
Sure there are some bad people in the world, but there are a lot of good people. People just need to look in the right direction – bottle half full, or maybe night just starting. Look at them Cinquieme runners. Sure I wasn’t that interested in them in the beginning; they were the contact and they blew it. But they did the right thing, they tried to make it right and even though it cost them a bit, they did get it right. They put themselves on the line and they took a stand. Good for them. WE went through a lot with them and then we offered them a fair deal and they were surprised. “You’d trust us?” Like we were crazy for ever considering trusting them! Why?!? Nothing good would have come from fragging them over and even if nothing good comes from them, hey, so what. They did well by us and we do the same.
People don’t get why I get so mad that I have to track someone down who does me wrong and rip him into tiny peices that could be mailed in thimbles back to their partners. But its because they don’t get that I give people the chance to do the right thing. Be upstanding. I trust them so they should trust me. People call me ‘vindictive’, but to me, your word is your life. Break it and it breaks you, ultimately.
That’s why I think I like this crew. Sure the cop is a bit loopy and the old jap is a bit of a stick. But they get it – don’t frag the team over and share ammo if there is a need. Even that geeky, odd little elf thing. No one trusts an elf. Of course, that’s axiomatic. But I am beginning to wonder if that is really an elf or one of those posers. His magic sure is a riot but he doesn’t act like the rest of those stuck up treehuggers. He was actually helpful and seemed to actually get hurt trying to help the team. How about that. wonders never cease. Next thing you know, we’ll be making deals with dragons or something equally foolish.
Now, obviously there is a line between business and life. I mean, there are people out there that cannot be trusted. Imagine trusting a Johnson – ridiculous. You have to know the lay of the land, after all. But I believe, in general, in giving them a chance. I do what I am hired to do and you pay me. That is trust. If they can’t be trusted that far, don’t take their nuyen and geek them first, because sure as an elf is ugly, they’ll be waiting gunning for you.
Now, my bottle ain’t empty, and the night isn’t over. Next one is on you Frenchie, make it a 12 year…
