The music in the restaurant was soft and languid. The clink of wine glasses and the sound of muted conversation permeated the air. Hirito toyed with his meal pushing the food around with his chopsticks without actually eating anything. He glanced at Vesic sitting across from him, and was struck once again with her beauty. He spoke, almost without meaning too, breaking the calm of the moment.
“I saw Griswald the other day."
Vesic looked up at him intently and raised one eyebrow, “Really?”
“Yep, he was all burnt out, a former shell of himself. It’s strange, you know, because I was sure he was the one that had our back.”
For a second, the elf woman did not move and then looked Hirito right in the eye. “You’re sure about this? You are absolutely sure that it was Griswald you saw?”
“Absolutely. And another thing… I am pretty sure Rodrigo is still alive. I could have sworn nothing could have lived through that explosion.”
Vesic paused, clearly taken aback, and then her shoulders slumped. She spoke in a voice that was so quiet that Hirito could barely hear her. “So… We run again? Restart again?”
Hirito sat quietly and the silence between them stretched out, but his eyes hardened when he finally spoke. “No, I am tired of running. Tired of being chased. Being the prey. It’s time we went on the hunt.
“I have a good crew, a little… unconventional but they do get the job done. I think its time to visit Jonas and have a word or two….”
Vesic smiled warmly and said, “Care for some cake?”
Hirito nodded his head and wondered if this night would promise to contain something even sweeter than the offered cake.
