First Soldiers Graduate from Academy
Lone Star Security Services announced today that the first group of former Metroplex Guard officers have graduated from their accelerated training program and are ready to take their places on the streets of Seattle. The new recruits will help to reinforce the overtaxed Fast Response Teams trying to deal with the growing tempo-related violence. Lone Star public relations spokesperson, Maxine Poocha, highlighted the corporation’s plan to have the new officers integrated into existing FRT’s within the next few days.
Critics have raised concerns about the training program, pointing out that military and police operations each require very different skill-sets. Metahuman rights lawyer, Larry Greenspoon, told reporters that he would be keeping careful track of the performance of these new officers as part of his role in the ongoing inquiry into Lone Star’s operating procedures and policies.
UCAS security services are gearing up for latest round of “End of the World” predictions. Pastor Harry Fishing of the Jesus First! Network continues to aggressively promote his prediction that September 12, 2072 will be the date that the Messiah returns to the world. Fishing claims that the faithful will be taken up to heaven, while the wicked of the world will continue to suffer increasingly disastrous events for five months before the Earth is cleansed in a great fireball. Supporters of JFN have been proselytizing throughout most major UCAS, Quebec, and CAS cities, working to get word of the apocalypse out to non-believers. Many have been spending thousands of their own nuyen to pay for AR advertising viroids and RFID tags.
September 12th is the thirteenth prediction of the apocalypse in the past decade, and the third made by Fishing himself. The Pastor has repeatedly acknowledged the errors made in previous calculations of the end of the world, stating: “Only God is infallible.” Previous Judgment Days have been accompanied by extensive rioting, death and property damage.
Fishing told reporters that he would be spending his last day on Earth with his family in their multimillion nuyen home in the Cascade Mountains.
Mitsuhama takes Beating on Stock Market
Panic racked the UCAS and New Tokyo Stock Exchanges last evening as investors began dumping shares in Mitsuhama Computer Technologies. The sell-off came after the release of a report by an executive from the prominent investment firm of Douglas, Ussing, Marshall and Brown, which confirmed that MCT’s recent takeover of ComDex Technologies had artificially elevated the company’s profit margin. The report was leaked to the press by an unnamed source and sparked a virtual riot on the stock exchange matrix node. Automated security defenses were nearly overwhelmed by unauthorized traders attempting to conduct emergency transactions.
MCT representatives officially denied the report and have begun efforts to prevent further decline in stock values.
Lawsuit Stuns Spectropharm
Officials at Spectropharm International were surprised by a court injunction banning further sales of their anti-follicular agent, Bearantin, introduced two months ago. The injunction follows a class action suit by a number of men who have suffered serious side effects from the use of the drug.
Spectropharm spokesperson, Janelle Mi, told the Sun that today’s injunction was the first the company had heard of problems with their product and that the corporation intended to fight the suit with all the means at their disposal. She also suggested that Remington International and the Braun-Schick group of companies were behind the court proceedings.
Mayor Narrowly Escapes Assassination Attempt
Auburn Mayor, Tyrone Monzo, is recovering at Humana Hospital in Tacoma this morning after a near fatal attack at SeaTac International Airport. A press release from the Mayor’s office indicates that an emaciated man screamed several obscenities, rushed Mr. Monzo, and stabbed him three times with a makeshift knife. The attacker was shot and killed by bodyguards and the Mayor was taken to the hospital with life-threatening wounds. Hospital officials report that Monzo is in serious but stable condition in the facility’s Secure Treatment Unit.
Lone Star officials have not yet released the name of the assailant, and have refused to respond to speculation that the man was under the influence of drugs at the time of the attack. Unnamed sources claim that several doses of the street drug tempo were found on his body. SeaTac officials told reporters that they are reviewing security procedures in light of this incident.
